Mystery Plant

(not a teaser but a genuine conundrum)

The delightful flower shown grew from seeds in a mixed wildflower packet. Two grew in our front yard, and two grew in the back.
Neither Sheila nor I have ever seen a flowering plant with pink or red blossoms growing right at the stem.

The leaves have serrated edges.
Another feature is that the lower part of the main stalk shows a pale orange color, especially early in its growth. This part of the stalk seems almost translucent.
The back-yard plants now have seed pods. These pods are light green and have a texture.
The front-yard plants were over-shadowed and then choked out by big Gerber daisies.
We have shown these pictures to personnel in the garden sections of Lowe’s, Wal-Mart, and Rainbow Gardens here in San Antonio.
We even showed them to Orlando, an expert at one of the Lowe’s. He once hosted a regular gardening broadcast locally.
Orlando studied the pictures very carefully, but did not correctly identify the plant.
Reader input is solicited! We shall show the pictures to the Hollywood Park Garden Club this weekend. Stay tuned!
